TACKLE GUIDE

Plenty of 130mm Halco Rooster poppers – 8 at least.

Plenty of 80mm Halco Rooster poppers – 6 at least Loads of River to Sea poppers. Assorted colors. As many as you can afford! Classic poppers work OK as well – Bring what you can.

Rapala Xrap 30 foot divers Assorted colors – for deep trolling. These aren’t cheap – but they really work, so if you can bring 6…..just do it!

Classic Bluewater F18 – These work OK and are affordable Make sure you get the deep version.

Halco 190 Lazer pro. Gold. & all Chrome colours – bring 4-6 of these.

Crazy deep Halco 190 Lazer pro. chrome colors – handy but not essential.

Yo-zuri    Hydro Magnum – Bring them if you can find them…they work too!!

Barra Lures – Bring a selection of Gold bombers, Tilsan’s, Lively Mad Mullet’s.

And whatever else you fancy. Same with soft plastics – White and black/gold are the go. As for slices – Halco twisty’s are the pick of the bunch – 40g, 55g & 70g. Bring a heap of these in silver – you will loose plenty.

ESSENTIAL EXTRAS

PE braid line (Not fused like Fireline) is the go. 30lb for the inshore stuff with 40 & 60lb leader. 50lb & 80lb for poppering and trolling with 80lb leaders. Bring a pack of 105lb single strand wire for your trolling lures – we will wire them up for you when you arrive if your not sure what to do. A couple of packets of solid rings is also wise, as it makes wiring lures a lot quicker.

Don’t forget a set of Game pliers – The sure-catch ones are cheap and work well.

Hollywood gear would include a Shimano Stella or Diawa Dog fight with matching Nitro Godzilla, or Shimano TCurve rod. This is the ultimate poppering outfit – In reality – bring the best you can afford. A Penn 850 Spin fisher will last the trip, but a Shimano SPHEROS 14000FB is a better bet and reasonably priced.

In the lighter weight barra gear – a decent overhead / bait caster outfit is great for those who know how to use them, for the rest of us spin reel like a Twin power is 6000FC would be the Ultimate weapon of choice, but again a 4000 size SYMETRE SY4000FJ or something similar in a Diawa will do the job nicely. Match to a decent rod – Graphite for those who know what they are doing – and Ugly sticks for those who are a bit rough on their gear.

For trolling – its hard to go past a Shimano TLD 20 or 25, please avoid Penn 330 GTI combos, they don’t cut it when it comes to fighting dog tooth tuna. A quality 15-24kg overhead rod is worth the investment – the Shimano Backbone elite are around $100 – but buy standard tips NOT roller tips as braid tends to jam in roller tipped rods.

If you are a fly fisher – but haven’t experience blue water and coral flats fishing – take our advise on what to bring – Its not like normal fly fishing here – its wild and un forgiving to say the least. A 60lb GT or Spanish Mackerel on fly is highly likely so quality gear is critical.

Leave your trout gear at home – 9 and 10 weight rods are the minimum. Sage rods, quality reels, loads of backing and quality leader material will ensure you have a trip of a lifetime.

Rio tropical core lines work well. Bring one floating line for popper fishing and 2-3 intermediate lines for the majority of the work and a sinking line if you want to target the pelagic critters. Be prepared to loose and damage a few as the coral and the fish take no prisoners. Generally we fish heavy leaders 80lb>60lb>40lb> and down to 20lb in the rivers. Bring plenty of quality leader material – you will need it.

In terms of fly’s – Big is the key in the coral. Baitfish profiles, Clousers - 3/0, 2/0 and 1/0 chartreuse over white, pink over white, blue over white and white over white.

An assortment 2/0 and 3/0 Pink things, and whistlers, Crease flies 2/0 Surf candy’s, and 3/0 poppers. Bring lots of them you will need them.

Bring a handful of gold bomber style flies as well – The barra love them.
